Sweet Vegetable Love

First pass at the girl character of my "Sweet Vegetable Love" story- she's also on a get well card to my aunty.  I want to enhance some colors via Photoshop, but that might wait until after I finish the rest of my illustrations for this story.

Basically the story is about a girl whose parents choke on vegetables and die.  As a result she hates vegetables and transforms her apartment into a sweets-only place UNTIL she meets a boy who loves veggies and cooks them in delicious ways for her.  I'm planning on shading/ emphasizing the important parts with a bit of payne's gray.

I would like to live in a sweets themed apartment; just saying.

THESIS TIME: testing!

Finally have a test up!  It's rough, but... it's still something moving on the screen which motivates me to keep on chugging.

THESIS TIME: New Living Room Design!

Drew a new living room- tried to combine the first two together.  Also added a rug- everyone loves rugs. At least my roommates and I do.

THESIS TIME: The Storyboarding Begins!

And it all begins now: storyboarding that is!  Here's a sneak peek!

I feel like recently my facial expressions and body language while working on thesis has been starting to mimick the little girl's movements more and more...

THESIS TIME: Living Rooms and Hallways!

Two very similar living rooms, but I wanted to move some furniture around/ move some furniture out and about.  Which do you like better?

Aaaand some views of the hallway; I'm still not quite happy with it, so I'll be doing more sketches of this as well.

Watercolor practice

Recently I've been making cards for people for fun/ for people who give me stuff.  It's just so fun to do something that's not school related and so relaxing.  I think I'm going to get started on the holiday seasons cards soon :]  Here's a little Halloween one I did and a thank you card for my cousin who gave me a buncha persimmons.  The thank you card turned out to look more like tomatos though...

Also, we ended up carving this guy in real life- what made it all the more special was that it was my first ever pumpkin carving!  It was fantastic.

My friend who is also an illustration major took a look at my other Halloween watercolors and said that I should try to be more precise with my coloring so with this thank you card I attempted that.  Did it work?

Candy Coated City

Been working on four illustrations showing how a girl's wish turns a city into a candy covered world.

First attempt:

Second attempt:

I really wanted to show that the candy taking over the city is vibrant and full of life.  This was the first time I've worked with watercolor so successfully!  It was really exciting and awesome.  Of course there's still a lot to learn, but this was a great experience.  And combining watercolor and digital was another good process to learn/ try out.

Lipsync Attempt

Had issues rendering this out in general, so unfortunately there is no sound.  Yeah, what's the point of a lipsync without sound you say? My response: IMSORRYYYYYYIMTECHNOLOGICALLYIMPAIREDohtheexcusesabound.  All in all, it's a draft.  Let me know what you think.

The girl on the viewer's left with the cell phone is talking into the cell about the incompetent mother on the right.  Here's some suggestions I already received- agree/ disagree? Add little feet as the stubs are distracting/ change girl on the right's arm so it's moving a bit more [the one that is holding a cell phone].  This isn't the whole thing, but maybe another test will be up soon?

THESIS TIME: Kitchens and the Kids' room!

I like to draw the insides of buildings/ rooms so I had a lot of fun designing and drawing the kitchen and the kids' room.  I tried to give the rooms more of an "off-kilter" look to offset how round our characters are especially b/c my previous kitchen sketch was a bit too clean.  Really pulled from Coraline.  This isn't too relevant, although its relevant to our thesis idea: I just love the scene where Coraline first meets the other mother in the kitchen and the other mother turns around and BAM-- scary button eyes.  Anyway, here are the new kitchen sketches~~~

And Danny and Maddy's room!  They share a teeny tiny room with a creepy stick-on moon on their wall; such strange kids.

IT'S THESIS TIME

So for our thesis my friend Stephanie and I are working together.  I just finished working on the character model sheet of the boy character we came up with- Danny.  Aaaand a sneak peek at our basic thesis idea: It's about two children who try to make their controlling and emotionally abusive mother proud via their warped perception of her demands.

And another close up of him.  Yay rocket ships on shirts and poofy tufts of hair!

Also did a sketch of the kitchen we'll be using:

Now onto making the mom's model sheet!  Can do, can do!

Poison Bottle

My first assignment for 2D Character was a "poison bottle" assignment.  We had to make the bottle enter via the right side of the screen, make the character transform, and make the bottle exit via the left side of the screen.  Working on some minor adjustments, but here's the first run of Red turning into Ms. Cuppycake!

Characters!!!

For my 2D Character class I tried to design a character that will eventually make a walk toward a mailbox in the hopes of delivering his/her love letter to the person he/she likes.  These are some of the characters I came up with in class.

Although this is the character that I think I'm going to use:

Not going to lie; I'm surprised how much I'm enjoying myself in my 2D Character class.  I haven't done any 2D Animation [besides the truck I did in Flash while in Italy] since the beginning of Sophomore year so I was pretty starting out, but I'm pretty happy that I'm enjoying this class so much.  I shall work hard to make this feeling continue all semester and hopefully for the rest of my life~~~

Shady Business: Getting Ready for the MICA show!

I shaded in a couple of my Firenze frames and since the MICA exhibition of our SACI work is going to go up on Monday I figured I'd post them up here in case anyone would like to see.  I didn't get around to finishing all, but here is a little taste!

It's a little different from the original storyboard I put up earlier in March, because I'm trying to get the storyboard to flow better.  I guess I thought the previous one was more jumpy?  [Like how I used arrows to show movement when I should have just drawn the truck in two different places in two of the earlier shaded panels.]  Anyways, let me know what you all think!

Bounding version 2.0!

I finished up the second half of the little Italian truck that I worked on during my study abroad in Italy!  Now the little truck is truly bumbling its way down Florence's streets.  I don't think I'll ever get over my fascination with those little trucks.  It's the ideal clown car.

Coloring Gluttony

I've been trying to translate my Firenze storyboards into digital drawings:

But while I've been working on that I've also been working on coloring in the "Gluttony Cupcake" that I worked on earlier in the summer!  Usually I avoid coloring in photoshop because color tends to terrify me, but I thought that I should experiment and try.  So, here goes!  It's not done yet, but here's a few versions of them in the early stages:

Reworking

I tried to rework certain Firenze shots.  After doing these I came to the conclusion that I'm probably not going to use any of these, but I did have a lot of fun drawing the little guy on the moped.  It made me want a moped; kind of.
